Understanding the DA Score: A Practical Guide for Health Websites

For a health professional, clinic or wellness business, a useful website does more than list services: it helps people find clear, trustworthy information. When planning search engine optimisation (SEO), site owners may encounter the DA score as a quick way to compare websites. It can offer context when assessing potential links, but it is not a measure of medical expertise, patient outcomes or the quality of health advice. Knowing what the figure can—and cannot—tell you helps keep SEO decisions grounded.

    What a DA score represents

Domain Authority (DA) is a score developed by Moz to estimate how likely a website is to rank in search results compared with other sites. It uses a logarithmic scale, so moving from a lower score to a higher one can become progressively harder. The calculation draws on link-related signals, including the number and quality of sites pointing to a domain. It is a comparative prediction, not a Google ranking factor or a direct assessment of a website’s content.

That distinction matters in health and beauty. A site with a strong DA score may have an established backlink profile, but that alone does not mean its health information is accurate or suitable for your audience. Before arranging a guest post or link placement, check the actual pages, authorship, editorial standards and relevance to your subject. For a closer look at what the metric measures and how it compares with other tools, read this guide to the DA score.

    Why the score changes

A DA score can rise or fall as Moz updates its data and as the wider web changes. New links may strengthen a site’s profile, while lost links or changes to other domains can affect its position in a comparison. A score may also move even when you have not made changes yourself: the metric reflects an evolving internet, not just your own actions.

For that reason, a small fluctuation is not automatically a reason to overhaul your SEO plan. Look at longer-term patterns alongside practical outcomes such as relevant referral visits, qualified enquiries and the visibility of important pages. If you are comparing two sites, check them using the same tool and around the same time. Comparing scores from different platforms can be misleading because each provider uses its own data and method.

DA, DR and Authority Score are not interchangeable

Ahrefs Domain Rating (DR) and Semrush Authority Score are other third-party metrics used to assess domains. They also draw on link and other signals, but their formulas and scales differ from Moz’s. A website might have a modest DA and a comparatively high DR, for example, without either tool necessarily being wrong. They are measuring authority in different ways.

Use these figures as screening tools rather than universal grades. If a site looks promising in one platform, review it directly before making a decision. Check whether its audience overlaps with yours, whether its pages receive genuine engagement and whether its links appear editorial rather than manufactured. A smaller specialist publication may be more valuable to a healthcare business than a much larger site with little topical connection.

How to assess a website for a link

When considering a guest post or link-building opportunity, combine the score with several checks:

    • Relevance: Does the website publish material connected to health, beauty, fitness or the audience you serve?

    • Content quality: Are articles useful, clearly written and supported by appropriate expertise?

    • Traffic and engagement: Do visitors appear to read and interact with the site, rather than the domain simply having a high metric?

    • Backlink profile: Do links appear to come from legitimate, relevant sources, or are there signs of artificial patterns?

    • Editorial fit: Would your contribution genuinely help the publication’s readers?

Health-related content deserves particular care because readers may use it to inform decisions about their wellbeing. Avoid choosing a placement solely because of its score. A relevant, well-edited article that serves readers is a stronger foundation for long-term trust than a link on an unrelated page.

Finding help for a website project

Some website owners manage SEO and content themselves; others bring in freelancers for writing, design, technical work or marketing. If you need someone with knowledge of a particular region, location can be a useful part of your search. On Osdire, freelancers can add a city and country to their profiles to appear in a location-based freelance search. The marketplace covers many kinds of work, so it can help buyers explore talent for different project needs.

As with any hiring process, review a freelancer’s samples, experience and proposed approach before agreeing on a project. Clarify the deliverables and timeline, and make sure any health content is reviewed by an appropriately qualified person where necessary. A score or profile location can help narrow a search, but neither replaces a thoughtful assessment of the work.

    Use the metric with perspective

The DA score is most useful when treated as one comparative signal among several. Track it over time if it helps you understand your link profile, but do not confuse it with search rankings, clinical credibility or audience trust. For health and wellness websites, the strongest SEO decisions balance relevant links and sound technical work with accurate, accessible content. That combination gives readers a better experience—and gives your website a more sustainable basis for growth.
